Mid-September is officially upon us. Westlake will soon be propelled through–slightly–cooler weather, football games, mums, and of course...Homecoming. With the highly anticipated Homecoming game being followed by Casino Chaparral, there’s much to be excited about.

Student Council has organized dress-up days leading up to the Homecoming Game including “Western Monday,” “Sports Tuesday,” “Pajama Day Wednesday,” “Mix-It-Up Thursday,” and of course the traditional “Red, White, and Blue” for Friday, September 22nd. This fun-filled day will be packed with the Homecoming Pep Rally in the morning, and Student Council’s Live Music Lunch during 4th and 5th periods. Here, students will be able to grab a burger, enjoy live music from The Fifth Flight and soak up the sun outside the Chap Court.

After Friday, the dazzling Casino Chaparral will transpire in the Chap Court. Preparations for the extravagant dance have steadily quickened, but will soon become frantic as September 23rd approaches...

As the second week of school rolls in, students get acclimated to their schedules, trepidation melts into a familiar confidence, and students begin their unique journey set to unfold in the next nine months. Perhaps the most obvious and familiar aspect in this window of time is the fast-paced tempo of classes, student life, extracurriculars, and everything in between.

Student Council is no different. With the start of the new school year, StuCo has already begun plans for its first project. The sudden approach of Hurricane Harvey has brought unprecedented flooding, displaced families, damaged communities, and instilled a sense of hopelessness for many Texans. In a combined effort, countless clubs at Westlake are holding drives to donate goods and supplies to all those affected by the natural disaster. Student Council will help with the initiatives of NHS and Teen Teaching to gather supplies for the displaced Texans at the Austin Convention Center in the coming weeks.

Here at Westlake, much of the fall semester is characterized by pep rallies, football games, and of course, Homecoming. Student Council proudly presents: Casino Chaparral. The dance’s theme is set to be “Las Vegas”, with the elegant ambiance, bold flashing lights, and glitz of an authentic Vegas casino. With September 23rd quickly approaching, Student Council has already begun the preparation. Game stations have been organized, decorations have been planned out, poster-painting has commenced, and a special “Senior Lounge” surprise has been hinted at.

The tangible excitement of the Homecoming Game and Dance will undoubtedly be felt in the coming weeks. What will also be felt is the spirit of giving and true solidarity within our community towards those affected by Harvey. It’s moments like these when the outstanding colors of our students and faculty are revealed. In the words of Linda Thompson, our “hearts cultivate an atmosphere of understanding, acceptance, tolerance, and compassion. We are all in this life together.”
